When I was young PaPa had a Jubilee Ford tractor we sometimes used on the farm. When I was six, I was staying with PaPa and Granny and drove the tractor to the end of the long driveway to catch the bus. At that time I had to stand up on the running boards to work the pedals. Years later I was still in my early teens and the tractor was on our farm in Hurdlow. The wheels were changed from one side to the other, this widened the tractor for the hills. I drove the tractor to the top of the big hill, and when I turned down the back side the tractor jumped out of gear. The old Ford tractors were known for having bad brakes, the pedals hit the running board with no effect. I was free wheeling, the tractor was hitting ground hog holes and rocks, the tractor was bouncing two feet from side to side. As the tractor increased in speed I started to jump off, but the wheels were wide and there was a boom pole on the back. The only chance I had was to ride it out. At the bottom of the hill was a patch of woods, and the river. It felt like I was doing eighty five, near the bottom the fescue and orchard grass was about knee high, I started cutting, and began to turn and slide. The tractor turned out the hill with the fence, me and the tractor were saved. Driving from the lower place to the house I turned white as a sheet. I told Daddy the tractor jumped out of gear, he said the tractor had never jumped out of gear, I didn't have it in good. He took the tractor part of the way up the small hill, and it jumped out with him. He told me not to drive the tractor on the hills it jumped out of gear.
